পুরী (Puri)-
..... বাঙালির চিরকালীন নস্টালজিয়া রয়েছে পুরীকে ঘিরে। ইতিহাসেও বহু প্রাচীনকাল থেকেই পুরী বা পুরুষোত্তম ক্ষেত্রের উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়। ওড়িশার এই একান্ত বাঙালিপ্রবণ শহরটির মূল আকর্ষণ দীর্ঘ সমুদ্রতট আর জগন্নাথ দেবের মন্দির। পুরীর বিচগুলির মধ্যে স্বর্গদ্বারের প্রশস্তিই সবচেয়ে বেশি। পুরীর সমুদ্রে স্নান করার ব্যাপক চল থাকলেও সমুদ্র অনেকসময়ই বেশ বিপজ্জনক হয়ে ওঠে, তাই সাবধানতা নেওয়া উচিত। বেড়ানোর সেরা সময় অক্টোবর থেকে ফেব্রুয়ারী। তবে সারাবছরই ভিড় লেগে থাকে।
ভারতের হিন্দুদের চারধাম অর্থাৎ বদরীনাথ, দ্বারকা, রামেশ্বরম এবং পুরী। পুরাণের কথায়, শ্রীজগন্নাথ বদরীতে স্নান করে দ্বারকায় অঙ্গসজ্জা করেন। তারপর পুরীতে অন্নভোগ সেরে রামেশ্বরমে শয়ান বা বিশ্রাম নেন।
কথিত আছে, আদিতে সূর্যবংশীয় রাজা অবন্তীরাজ ইন্দ্রদ্যুম্ন স্বপ্নাদেশ পেয়ে জগন্নাথ মন্দিরটি তৈরি করেন। বর্তমান মন্দিরটি ১১০০ খ্রীষ্টাব্দে রাজা অনন্তবর্মন শুরু করলেও তাঁর পৌত্র রাজা অনঙ্গ ভীমদেবের আমলে ১১৯৮ খ্রীষ্টাব্দে সমাপ্ত হয়। গর্ভগৃহ বা মূল মন্দিরের উচ্চতা ১৯২ফুট। প্রবেশদ্বার চারটি- সিংহদ্বার, হস্তীদ্বার, অশ্বদ্বার ও খাঞ্জাদ্বার। এরমধ্যে সিংহদ্বারটি প্রধান। এখানেই কোনারক থেকে আনা অরুণ স্তম্ভটি রয়েছে। পূর্বদিকে মূল প্রবেশদ্বার বা সিংহদ্বার। ৬৭০ফুট দীর্ঘ ও ৬৪০ফুট চওড়া মন্দিরটি ওড়িশি শিল্পধাঁচে চার ভাগে বিভক্ত- ভোগমন্ডপ, নাটমন্দির, জগমোহন ও দেউল।
কথিত আছে, স্বপ্নাদেশে সমুদ্র থেকে পাওয়া কাঠের সাহায্যে জগন্নাথ, বলরাম ও সুভদ্রার মূর্তিটি তৈরি। মন্দিরের বেদিতে বলরাম, জগন্নাথ ও সুভদ্রার মূর্তির সঙ্গে রয়েছে লক্ষ্মী, সরস্বতী ও নীলমাধবের মূর্তিও। বিষ্ণুরই আরেক রূপ জগন্নাথ। মন্দিরচত্বরে আরও চল্লিশটি ছোটো মন্দির আছে। মন্দিরে শুধুমাত্র হিন্দুদের প্রবেশাধিকার আছে। ক্যামেরা, মোবাইল, চামড়ার কোনও জিনিস সঙ্গে নিয়ে ঢোকা নিষেধ।
পুরী শহরের আশেপাশে স্থানীয় দ্রষ্টব্যগুলি রিকশা বা অটোতে ঘুরে দেখে নেওয়া যায়। এরমধ্যে রয়েছে চক্রতীর্থ বা স্বর্গদ্বার, কানপাতা হনুমান, বিদুরপুরী, মহোদধি, সুদামাপুরী, সোনার গৌরাঙ্গ মঠ, শংকরাচার্য মঠ, কবির মঠ, নানক মঠ, রাধাকান্ত মঠ বা কাশীমিশ্র ভবন, সিদ্ধবকুল মঠ, শ্বেতগঙ্গা, শ্রীশ্রীগুণ্ডিচা মন্দির বা মাসির বাড়ি বা বাগানবাড়ি, দশাবতার মঠ, তোতা গোপীনাথজির মন্দির, কপালমোচন মন্দির ইত্যাদি।
পুরী থেকে ভুবনেশ্বরের পথে ১৭কিমি দূরে সাক্ষীগোপাল। দেবতা এখানে শ্রীকৃষ্ণ রূপে পূজিত হন। এই পথেই পুরী থেকে ৯কিমি দূরে চন্দনপুর থেকে আরও দেড় কিমি এগিয়ে পটচিত্রের জন্য খ্যাত রঘুরাজপুর।
সারাদিনের কন্ডাক্টেড ট্যুরে দেখে নেওয়া যায় কোণারক, নন্দনকানন, ভুবনেশ্বরের মন্দিরগুলো, খণ্ডগিরি, উদয়গিরি, ধৌলি বা ধবলেশ্বর ইত্যাদি।

যাওয়াঃ- নিকটতম রেলস্টেশন পুরী। ওড়িশার প্রতিবেশি রাজ্যগুলির বিভিন্ন জায়গা থেকে ও ওড়িশার বিভিন্ন শহরের সঙ্গে বাস যোগাযোগ রয়েছে পুরীর। পুরী থেকে কন্ডাক্টেড ট্যুরে কোনারক, উদয়গিরি-খণ্ডগিরি ও ভুবনেশ্বর বেড়িয়ে নেওয়া যায়।

থাকাঃ- পুরীর সমুদ্র ও জগন্নাথদেবের মন্দিরকে কেন্দ্র করে নানা বাজেটের অজস্র হোটেল ছড়িয়ে রয়েছে পুরো এলাকা জুড়ে। ধর্মশালাও আছে বেশ কয়েকটি। সস্তায় থাকার জন্য রয়েছে নানান সংস্থার হলিডে হোমগুলি। পুরীর এস টি ডি কোডঃ- ০৬৭৫২।

কেনাকাটাঃ- সমুদ্রের ধার জুড়ে শাঁখ, ঝিনুক, পাথরের নানান পসরা নিয়ে হাজির দোকানীরা। শহরেও মিলবে হস্তশিল্প বা তাঁতশিল্পের অনেক দোকান। কটকি, সম্বলপুরী শাড়ি, রঘুরাজপুরের পটশিল্প, পিপলির অ্যাপ্লিক, শাঁখ, ঝিনুক অথবা পাথরের ঘরসাজানোর জিনিস -এসবই হতে পারে পুরী বেড়ানোর স্মারক।

খাওয়াদাওয়াঃ- পুরী বেড়িয়ে এসে সবাইকে আর কিছু নাহোক গজা কিম্বা জগন্নাথের মহাপ্রসাদ চেনাপরিচিত সবাইকে দেওয়া বাঙালির এক রীতি। মন্দিরে পুজোর বিনিময়ে প্রসাদতো মেলেই, মন্দিরের আনন্দবাজারেও কিনতে পারা যায় এই মহাপ্রসাদ।

উৎসবঃ- পুরীর সেরা উৎসব জগন্নাথদেবের রথযাত্রা। আষাঢ় মাসে এই রথযাত্রা উৎসবে দেশি-বিদেশি লক্ষাধিক পুণ্যার্থী আসেন।
ডিসেম্বর মাসে স্বর্গদ্বার লাগোয়া সৈকতে অনুষ্ঠিত হয় বিচ ফেস্টিভাল।

SREE GUNDICHA TEMPLE


Gundicha temple is one of the most renowned temples in Puri. Being another sacred place of Puri, this temple is the key segment of the well known Rath Yatra festival (Car Festival) of Puri. It is located in the Gundicha square, near Puri bus stand. The exact geographical location of this temple is LONGITUDE 85050’33”E LATITUDE 19049’00”N. The temple is also known as 'Gundicha Ghar', 'Gundicha Mandir' and 'Sree Gundicha Temple'.

Next to the Great Jagannath temple, the most important sanctuary of Lord Jagannath is the Sree Gundicha temple, the abode to which Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are driven each on his or her wooden car once in a year, during the car festival. Except for these few days, it is unoccupled, but there is a small establishment of servents by whom it is regularly maintained. It is situated at the other end of the great highway(Badadanda). The distance between the gates of Jagannath temple and the Gundicha temple is exactly 2,688.0696 metres (8,327 feet). Since the deities travel from Jagannath temple to Sree Gundicha temple, the Car Festival of Puri is also known as 'Sree Gundicha Yatra'.

Gundicha Temple has some interesting legends related to it. One legend says that Gundicha was the queen of the King Indradyumna, the legendary founder of the 1st great Jagannath temple. It is because of the deep devotion of the queen Gundicha, Lord Jagannath prefers to pay a visit to her house for nine days during Car Festival. Another Legend says Gundicha Ghar is the house of Lord Krishna’s adoring aunt Gundicha. It is believed that their aunt gives a welcome to the three siblings with a special delicacy made of rice called 'padoapitha'. This rice cake is also known as 'Podapitha' or 'Porapitha'. This temple is regarded as equally holy as Jagannath temple as Lord Jagannth stays here for nine days during the annual car festival.

The temple built in typical Kalingan style . The temple is sorrounded by a wall and stands in the middle of a garden. The height of the wall is 20 feet and width is 5 feet. The length of the temple is 430 feet. The height of this temple is 75 feet. The temple consists of four parts connected with kitchen rooms by a narrow passage. All the four structures (Vimana, Jagamohana, Natamandapa and Bhogamandapa) bear the traces of several plasterings and are carved in places with obscene figures in mortar. The whole temple is built of light gray sand stone. There is a plain raised seat, 4 feet high and 19 feet long, made of chlorite and this is called the 'Ratnavedi', the throne on which the images are placed when brought to the temple. This temple has two gates. The western gate is the main gate and the eastern side gate. The eastern gate is also known as Nakachana gate. The deities enter to this temple through the west gate and come out by the east gate. The temple is under the care and maintenance of Jagannath Temple Administration, Puri.

CHAKRATIRTHA / CHAKRA NARASIMHA TEMPLE / CHAKRA NRUSINGHA TEMPLE / CHAKRA NARAYANA TEMPLE

Chakratirtha is an important pilgrim centre of Puri. It is situated towards the northern end of Puri town and at a distance of 3 kilometers from the Lord Jagannath temple. It is located on the right side of Chakratirtha Road, leading from Subas Bose Chowk to Penthakota, the fisherman village. At this place there is a temple dedicated to Lord Nrusingha. Local people known this temple in varios names like Chakra Narasimha Temple, Chakra Nrusingha Temple and Chakra Narayana Temple. At this temple, a large Chakra, the devine weapon of Lord Visnu or Jagannath, is being worshipped in water in the sanctum sanctorum made of black granite with a statue of Lord Narayan at the centre, known as Chkranarayana.

The presiding deities of the temple are three images of Lord Nrusingha known as Abhaya Nrusingha, Chakra Nrusingha and Laxmi Nrusingha. These three different forms of Lord Nrusingha as worshipped at Chakratirtha have unique values in Hindu religion. The form of Abhaya Nrusingha represents Sri Balabhadra. The form of Chakra Nrusingha represents Goddess Subhadra and the form of Laxmi Nrusingha represents Lord Jagannath. In puranas, the first three gods of the universe, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswar have also found expression in the forms of Chakra Nrusingha, Laxmi Nrusingha and Abhaya Nrusingha respectively.

It is believed by local people that once there was a cyclone in Puri and the Neelachakra (the wheel at top of Jagannath Temple) was displaced from its location, flown across the sky and finally fell at Chakratirtha. It is also believed that the 'Daru' (divine log of wood for the creation of deities of Lord Jagannth temple during Navakalevara ) touched the ground at Chakratirtha for the first time coming through the sea. Chakratirtha has another spiritual significance as the abode of Goddess Mahalaxmi's father is situated here.

Chakratirtha temple has close association with Lord Jagannth temple and every year the Agnyamala from Lord Jagannath comes to Lord Nrusingha. Narasimha Janma festival is observed in this temple with great devotion.

MAUSIMA TEMPLE / ARDHASINI TEMPLE


Situated almost on the midway of the grand road, at Balagandi square, there is a small temple dedicated to Goddess Mausima. Mausima temple is located on the right side of the Grand Road leading from the Jagannath temple towards Gundicha temple. She is called Mausima (the mother's sister) of Lord Jagannath. Mausima is a combination of two words, 'Mausi' and 'Ma'. In Odia language 'Mausi' means 'Aunt' and 'Ma' means 'Goddess'.

Goddess Mausima is also known as Ardhasini. It is stated in the Vaisanava Knadha of Skanda Purana that Mausima drank half the sea water that once over flooded Puri and saved the town of Puri. There for her name become 'Ardhasini' and the temple is also called as Ardhasini Temple. It is a belief among the local people that Goddess Ardhasini, together with Kapalamochana Shiva, act as the day and night guardians of Puri town.

Mausima temple is facing towards south and closely associated with the Car festival of Lord Jagannath. As per the rituals of Car Festival, on the day of Bahuda Jatra (return car festival day), the chariots of Balabhadra and Subhadra are pulled directly to the Singha Dwara (Lion's Gate of Jagannth Temple), whereas the chariot of Jagannath stops in front of Mausima temple for a while. Here, Lord Jagannth accepts his favorite rice cake known as 'Poda Pitha' from his aunt. Other festivals like Mahasaptami, Mahasaptami, Mahanavami are also observed in Ardhasini temple.

ALAMCHANDI TEMPLE

The Alamchandi Temple is situated in the Kumbharpada area of Puri. It is located on the left side of the Puri-Bhubaneswar road leading from Hospital square towards Atharanala bridge.

The temple is facing towards east and the presiding deity is Goddess Alamchandi. Alamchandi is one of the Asta (Eight) Chandis of Puri. The other seven Chandis are Vimala, Ramachandi, Harachandi, Baseli, Varahi, Dakshina Chandi and Jhadeswari. Famous festivals like Durgastami, Satapuri Amabasya, Makar Sankranti etc. are observed in this temple. Priests of Alamchandi temple carry traditional prasad to offer Lord Jagannath on the eve of Makar Sankranti.

Alam Chandi temple is closely associated with the Navakalevara festival of Lord Jagannath Temple. Alam Chandi is present at the entrance to the Puri town. During Navakalevara festival, the carts loaded with the sacred Daru (wooden logs) are brought into Puri via the road in front of Alam Chandi temple. As per the tradition, after getting agnyamala (permission) from Goddess Alamchandi the Sacred wood came into Puri. It is believed that Alam Chandi is supreme to santify the logs so that no harm is done at the time of shaping them to form the figures of the three deities.

ASTASAMBHU TEMPLE / ASTA SAMBHU TEMPLE


A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Tiadi Sahi of Puri. This temple known as Astasambhu temple. In local language 'Asta' means 'Eight' and 'Sambhu' is another name of Lord Shiva. Astasambhu temple houses a cluster of eight Shiva lingas made of precious stones. Each one of them is of a different colour. Some are white while some are red and black. Thus they are very attractive to devotees. The Shivalingas appear different in colour when looked at from different directions. Due to the reflection of the Sun their colour changes. These eight shiva lingas are named after different names of Lord Shiva such as Markandeswar, Yajneswara, Nilakantheswara, Vilveswara, Kapalamochana, Baleswara, Isaneswara and Pataleswara.

This is another ancient temple connected with the Puri kings. It is said that Asta Sambhu cured once the ancient king from a fatal disease. As per the legend, the Shivalingas here are ones that were captured when the kings defeated opposing kingdoms. The Asta sambhu temple is a small temple on the campus of the Sri Sri Radha Rasik Raj temple. These are the family deities of Maharaja Prataprarudra and were worshiped even before the time of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Also in this temple are Gaura Nitai deities that were personally installed by Maharaja Prataprarudra.

SONAR GAURANGA TEMPLE / SUNAR GOURANGA TEMPLE


Sonar Gauranga temple is an important pilgrim centre of Puri. It is situated towards the northern end of Puri town and at a distance of 3 kilometers from the Lord Jagannath temple. It is located on the left side of Chakratirtha road, leading from Subas Bose Chowk to Penthakota, the fisherman village. This temple is dedicated to Lord Gauranga.

Tota Gopinath Temple

In this Ashram, Rashikananda Goswami used to worship the idol of Sri Krishna. The temple has beautiful sculptures of Krishna in serene pastoral surroundings. According to 'Madalapanji' this temple was built by Prachanda Keshari.

Narayani Temple

Situated in Dolamandapa street. During the durga Puja for sixteen days in the month of Ashwina, the images of Durga & Madhava from Srimandir visit this temple for a period of eight days.

Charchika Temple

Situated near the Sri Jagannath temple office on the grand road.The carpenters and bhoi sevaka worship this Goddess at the time of the construction of chariots.

Kanaka Durga Temple
It is in the premises of the present srinahar(palace) of the Maharaja, in front of the Sri Jagannath temple office. Certain materials for preparation of bhog for the deities of these temples are supplied by the Sri Jagannath temple administration. The deities of these temple are the home deities of Gajapati Maharaja.

Jayaadurga Temple

Situated near the Narendra tank. The expenses for the daily and periodical bhog of the Goddess in borne entirely by the Sri Jagannath temple administration.
